Pavilion Square

As part of Gropius‘ Kulturinseln, artists Nuray Demir and Pia Lanzinger are exploring the newly redesigned Pavilion Square in the green corridor as a space for social interaction—working alongside the residents of Gropiusstadt for three years.

Walter Gropius dreamed of a city that not only provides housing but also brings people together. The artists take up this idea and ask: What defines a vibrant neighborhood? Who looks out for whom, and why? How do friendship, care, and trust develop between people who live next door or in the same neighborhood?

The temporary tea pavilion is intended to become an open meeting place for all residents. Over a glass of tea, the artists invite you to strike up a conversation, bring your own questions and thoughts, and reflect together on what unites the neighborhood. Your voices and ideas will form the core of the project.

The project Tea Pavilion begins on June 17 and will be held every Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday from 3 to 6 p.m. in the Grünzug until July 10. It will conclude in September with a large communal dinner: an open-air celebration of the neighborhood.

Everyone is warmly invited to stop by—bring your questions and ideas.

Nuray Demir and Pia Lanzinger both grew up in large housing estates: in the Sauerland and in Hasenbergl on the outskirts of Munich. Nuray’s parents came from Anatolia; Pia’s mother from a village near Semmering. This shared experience shapes their artistic work: close to people, collaborative, and open to what a place has to say. Through actions, performative presentations, and shared moments, they transform the tea pavilion into a space for encounter and exchange. They look forward to getting active together with the residents of Gropiusstadt at the pavilion square.
