Detlef Mallwitz’s installation Kopfstelen at Löwenzahn Elementary School consists of two-faced bronze heads mounted on 6-meter-high wooden posts. The heads are oriented so that they face both the classrooms and the schoolyard at the same time. This dual orientation connects the school’s interior and exterior spaces and creates a visual link between different areas of the school grounds.
The tension between geometry and figuration served as Mallwitz’s artistic starting point—inspired by Constantin Brancusi’s sculptures, whose flowing figures stand on strongly geometric pedestals. Through a series of head sketches, he developed three head forms for this work: the Calamari Head, the Pomegranate Head, and the Cephalopod.
