Verhülltes entdecken!
Festival as part of DRAUSSENSTADT featuring visual arts, theater, and music in public spaces
No livestreams, filmed documentaries, virtual spaces, or digital formats—instead, we want to transform the current challenges posed by the pandemic into opportunities for participation and, with the festival “Discover what lies beneath!”, continue to provide access to art and culture—not indoors, not online—but outdoors in Neukölln!
Nine very different, partly participatory art projects in public spaces not only address the pandemic-related changes our society has undergone and the feelings and emotions in these anxious times, but also explore the unveiling of hidden or forgotten history. Socially relevant topics will come to light again this weekend.
What will be revealed this weekend in Neukölln, and what will remain hidden?
Program Overview:
KARAGÖZ ON THE MOVE
Fri, Oct 1 and Sat, Oct 2
6–9 PM each day
Aufbruch Neukölln e.V.
Uthmannstraße 17-19, 12043 Berlin
The Turkish shadow theater “Karagöz,” originally a puppet theater in which the residents of Istanbul revealed everyday stories, serves as the starting point for a transposition into everyday life in Neukölln. Satire, crude humor, and plenty of wit are fundamental components of this art form.
→ Turkish shadow theater, workshop, Aufbruch Neukölln e.V. in cooperation with artist Caspar Pauli
STILL FIELDS
Oct. 1–3, daily
8 a.m. – 6 p.m.
Columbiadamm Cemetery
Columbiadamm 122, 10965 Berlin
The cemetery on Columbiadamm reflects Germany’s imperial, colonial, and genocidal history. It is Germany’s first Muslim cemetery, Berlin’s historically central military cemetery, and the site of the “Hererostein,” a controversial monument to the perpetrators of German colonial crimes against the Herero and Nama peoples. Through conversations with activists, historians, cultural practitioners, cemetery staff, and visitors, Still Fields explores the cemetery’s contradictory history and present.
→ Sound installation in 3 parts, Ali El-Darsa and Elias Kosanke.
The installation can only be heard via smartphone with internet access and headphones.

10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Zönoteka
Hobrechtstraße 54, 12047 Berlin
The extent to which state interventions shape the architectural design of public space and how this space is adapted and transformed by citizens are central elements of Andrea Pichl’s art project. The original facade structures are concealed and revealed in new models, allowing for a different perception of the surroundings.
→ Installation, Zönotheka represented by Mate Feles in cooperation with Andrea Pichel
MUSA x PARADISIACA L.
Sun, Oct. 3
10 a.m. – 8 p.m.
Zönoteka
Hobrechtstraße 54, 12047 Berlin
In her research project Musa × paradisiaca L., Martina Pozzan uses large-format photographs to examine the preservation of biodiversity through biological collections and questions the responsibility of reproduction. As part of the collaboration program with Critique & Culture, the ZÖNOTÉKA’s window display area is transformed into a public laboratory for experimentation, addressing issues of ecological and social sustainability.
→ Photographs, Zönotheka represented by Mate Feles in collaboration with Martina Pozzan
