Stephan Kurr / Silke Riechert: Bezeichnung

The work “Bezeichnung” was created through a participatory process with the Clay School. The title derives from the idea of inscribing oneself into the emerging school building—literally marking the building and, figuratively, naming its functions.

Word clouds were developed for five different locations on the exterior façade. The words were collected in 2020 during the COVID-19 contact restrictions: via an online platform, school stakeholders were asked to submit one noun, one verb, and one adjective each. The collected words were sorted, fragmented, and incorporated into the masonry pattern. Approximately 1,200 brick molds were removed prior to firing, stamped with the words, fired, and finally laid into the facade.
